Other Geothermal Attractions Worth Seeking Out
Iceland’s geothermal geography extends far beyond the Reykjanes Peninsula, and some of the most extraordinary geothermal landscapes in the country are largely unknown to visitors who stick to the Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon.
Landmannalaugar, in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve of the central highlands, is one of the most visually surreal places in Iceland – a natural hot spring pool sits at the edge of a vast lava field, surrounded by obsidian peaks and mountains streaked in rhyolite colors of red, orange, green, and purple. It’s accessible only in summer (roughly July through September) and requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle or a highland bus. The spring itself is free to use, the camping is cheap, and the hiking trails through the surrounding landscape are extraordinary.
Mývatn Nature Baths in the north of Iceland is often described as the Blue Lagoon’s less-crowded counterpart, which is both accurate and slightly unfair – the Mývatn baths have their own distinctive character, sitting amid an active volcanic landscape near Lake Mývatn with its surreal pseudocraters and lava formations. The sulfurous quality of some spring water can affect the taste slightly, which some people love and others find off-putting.
The indirect geothermal influence on Icelandic food is far broader. The greenhouse industry enabled by geothermal heating has shifted what’s available in Icelandic supermarkets and restaurants year-round. Icelandic-grown tomatoes, which benefit from both the geothermal heat and the long summer daylight hours, have a reputation for exceptional sweetness. The fish farms and salmon hatcheries that use geothermally tempered water produce the trout and Arctic char that appear on menus across the country.
The Future of Iceland’s Geothermal Resources
The ground beneath Iceland is not static, and recent years have provided a dramatic reminder of that fact. Beginning in 2021, a series of volcanic eruptions broke out on the Reykjanes Peninsula – the same peninsula that houses the Blue Lagoon and the Svartsengi power plant. The eruptions continued intermittently through 2023 and into 2024, at one point forcing temporary evacuations and, in early 2024, causing significant damage to infrastructure in the nearby town of Grindavík. The Blue Lagoon closed and reopened multiple times as lava flows approached and volcanic activity subsided.
This created an unusual situation: one of the world’s most famous wellness destinations, marketed partly on the idea of being in harmony with natural forces, found itself in genuine conflict with those same forces. The response from the Blue Lagoon company and Icelandic authorities was pragmatic and transparent – monitoring the eruption patterns, building protective berms, and communicating clearly with the public about closures and reopenings. The fact that the lagoon survived several close calls is a testament to both good engineering and a bit of geological luck.
The broader sustainability questions around Iceland’s geothermal use are more complex. Geothermal energy is often described as renewable, but this requires some nuance. Individual geothermal fields can be depleted if extraction rates exceed the natural recharge rate – a phenomenon already observed in some Icelandic fields, where water tables have dropped after decades of intensive use. The Svartsengi field, which powers both the nearby geothermal plant and supplies the Blue Lagoon, is carefully managed to avoid over-extraction, but the growing demand from tourism and industry creates ongoing pressure.
Iceland is also grappling with the tension between its identity as a pristine natural environment and the industrial infrastructure that geothermal energy requires. The Reykjanes Peninsula, now a UNESCO Global Geopark, is covered in power lines, pipes, turbines, and drilling equipment alongside its ancient lava fields and hot springs. Whether this represents an honest integration of human civilization with natural forces, or an industrial intrusion on a landscape of global significance, depends very much on your perspective – and on who you ask.
What seems clear is that geothermal culture will remain central to Iceland’s identity for as long as the island sits on its volcanic hot spot. The relationship between the people and the heated earth runs too deep – too embedded in the language, the food, the daily rhythms of bathing and warmth – to be anything other than fundamental. The Blue Lagoon, for all its tourist polish, is really just the most visible expression of something that has shaped Icelandic life since the first Norse settlers climbed into a hot spring on a winter evening and decided this strange, steaming island might be worth staying in after all.
